How to open a file
Drag photos, videos or a whole folder onto the window, use File → Open… (⌘O), or right-click a file in the Finder and choose FastEXIF.
FastEXIF does not show up in the Finder menu
The Finder extension must be turned on. Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions, find the Finder section and turn FastEXIF on. If it still does not show, relaunch the Finder (⌥ + right-click the Finder icon in the Dock → Relaunch).
App Store or this site: the difference
Both read the same metadata. The version from this site also has:
- The panel next to Quick Look: press space on a photo in the Finder and the metadata appears beside the preview. It needs permissions (Accessibility and Automation) that App Store apps cannot ask for.
- The picture of Blackmagic RAW clips, when the Blackmagic SDK is installed. In the App Store version, .braw files show metadata only.
- The shutter count, when ExifTool is installed.
In both, nothing from your photos leaves your computer (see the Privacy Policy).
A field does not show up
FastEXIF shows what is written in the file. If the camera or the program that exported the photo did not write a field (GPS, lens, author), there is nowhere for it to come from. Photos saved from social networks and messaging apps usually arrive without metadata.
